ButcherBox migrates 400,000 subscribers to Recharge in 76 business days
ButcherBox is a B Corp-certified meat and seafood subscription brand delivering grass-fed beef, free-range organic chicken, and wild-caught seafood to more than 400,000 customers nationwide. Founded in 2015 by Mike Salguero as something he expected to be a side project, the company grew into one of the largest DTC subscription businesses in the country without outside investment, funded entirely by the subscription model it built and ran itself.
Challenge
For more than a decade, ButcherBox ran on a custom-built engine it owned and operated entirely. In 2022, the brand moved to a headless implementation of Shopify, but continued to maintain a custom infrastructure to power their subscriptions. But as the subscription commerce landscape matured around them, the custom stack that had once given ButcherBox control began to slow down innovation.
Subscription changes that should have been simple took months to build and ship. Every test required developer involvement, and every idea had to clear a high bar before it was worth the resources.
The constraints showed up in specific places. Billing cycle consistency had become a meaningful source of complexity: customers were on windows ranging from 28 to 31 days depending on when they signed up and how the custom logic had accumulated over the years. Standardizing it would have required months of analyst and engineering time. Meanwhile, the backlog of ideas waiting to be tested kept growing.
When we came up with an idea, we had to know it was going to work. We wanted to move to a platform where we could easily test all of the ideas we had, so even if it didn’t deliver results, we could learn more, deliver more value to our customers through iteration.”

Solution
When the ButcherBox team noticed other brands running complex subscription models on Shopify Liquid with Recharge, it confirmed what they had suspected: the constraints they were working around weren’t inherent to the model. They were a product of their stack.
ButcherBox ran a full RFP. Two things decided it for Recharge. The first was the partnership philosophy: ButcherBox wanted a partner that would build with them through implementation and beyond, not hand over a product and a support queue. The second was what the platform put back in the hands of the business. Recharge gave marketing and merchandising teams a real interface to manage the subscription experience without opening an engineering ticket.
Recharge’s team co-designed the solutions architecture with ButcherBox and built a proof of concept showing the full subscription model running live. By the time the evaluation concluded, the conversation had shifted from feature comparisons to how the two companies would work together.

Execution
ButcherBox assembled three partners for the project: Shopify as the commerce platform, Recharge for subscriptions, and eHouse, a Platinum-tier Shopify agency, responsible for the build. Discovery began in December 2025 in the middle of ButcherBox’s busiest season. The new stack launched 76 business days later.
The hardest technical work of the project was keeping the subscription model intact. ButcherBox’s fixed and custom box model had been the centerpiece of the member experience for more than a decade. Customers build a box, customize it month to month, and trust that it shows up as specified. The goal was to move the infrastructure without disrupting any of that.
The team rebuilt ButcherBox’s custom box builder, the behavior-driven cancellation flow, and the product availability logic that adjusts what customers can select based on their shipping location, inside Recharge using the Recharge SDK. The company’s loyalty program, Sizzle Society, was integrated directly into the Recharge customer portal through Antavo so customers could see their points and convert them to credits without leaving their account. For 400,000 members, the migration was imperceptible. Boxes showed up on schedule, customizations held, and nothing in the experience signaled that the infrastructure underneath had been rebuilt from the ground up.
With an expedited timeline like this, 76 days total, every single day was consequential. And that’s why the strength of our partners mattered.”

Results
Early performance numbers reflected the change in platform. Visual load speed improved by roughly 40%, with core web vitals staying healthy throughout the migration.
Build-to-production cycle time improved by an estimated 20%, meaning features and iterations shipped meaningfully faster once work was underway.
Non-engineering teams, like marketing and merchandising, can now make changes to the subscription experience directly, without opening an engineering ticket.
The billing cycle complexity that had been years in the making became a configuration decision on Recharge. ButcherBox could now offer standardized billing options, test different windows, and make changes that previously required months of analyst and engineering time.
Conclusion
With Shopify running the storefront and Recharge running the subscription engine, ButcherBox’s team could redirect its attention to the work only it can do: sourcing standards, the member experience, and what shows up at hundreds of thousands of doorsteps every month.
Instead of building and maintaining every retention workflow from scratch, ButcherBox now leverages Recharge tools like Cancellation Prevention and Rewards, helping them spend less time on infrastructure and more time on the ideas that move the business forward. The company began sending biweekly release notes to the full team, a cadence that reflects what it feels like to operate at a different pace.
The next chapter is already underway. ButcherBox is re-envisioning its full member experience, including a loyalty program designed to give customers even more reasons to stay. The company that spent a decade building every system itself is now asking a different question: not what can we build, but what should we.
This project was about getting back to the work we’re great at. We’re not trying to be a technology company. We want to be the best possible partner to our customers.”
